Master Conflict Theory in Action: A Model for Integrating Couples and Sex Therapy

Presented by: Stephen Betchen, D.S.W. and Heather Davidson, Ed.M., M.A., LPC, CST

3CE

This 3 1/2-hour didactic and interactive workshop will offer a comprehensive treatment model specifically designed to treat couples who present with a wide variety of problems, including sexual symptoms. The model is based on Master Conflict Theory (MCT): an integrative approach which combines psychoanalytic conflict theory and psychodynamic family-of-origin work with basic principles and exercises of sex therapy. MCT is based on book, Magnetic Partners (Betchen, 2010).

Participants will specifically be able to: define MCT, learn MCT’s key factors, identify the part master conflicts play in attraction, identify 19 master conflicts that plague couples, perform a quick and accurate assessment of a couple and their symptoms, including various sexual symptoms such as erectile disorder (ED), premature ejaculation (PE), hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), and vaginismus. Other issues such as sadomasochism, paraphilias, fetishes, and open relationships including polyamorous couples, swingers, hot wives, and the cuckoldress/cuckold union will be addressed.

Detailed case studies will be utilized for illustration. Extensive handouts will be supplied and power point will be utilized. Role play and audience interaction will also be encouraged.

Learning Objectives:

Participants will be able to define MCT and identify its many key factors.
Participants will be able to identify the 19 master conflicts which underlie a couple’s symptoms, including sexual symptoms.
Participants will explain a new way of conceptualizing attraction and partner choice.
Participants will describe a quick and accurate way to assess couples with sexual and non-sexual problems.

Cultivating Resilience in Counseling and Psychotherapy

Presented by: Lyz DeBoer, Ph.D.

3CE

Description: Stress arises when individuals perceive threats to their well-being or think that they cannot manage demands being made on them. Negative outcomes can occur for individuals when their stress levels exceed a manageable amount and they perceive themselves to be in a state of crisis. These crisis situations have the potential to activate physiological, psychological, and behavioral response mechanisms meant to aid in survival and require therapeutic interventions to manage or resolve.
In this 3-hour continuing education training program, Dr. Lyz DeBoer will describe how to help clients effectively navigate crisis situations, regain a sense of stability, and cultivate resilience. Dr. DeBoer will describe her use of intentional focus to promoting healthy responses to life circumstances and how clinicians can encourage the processes of healing and growth that aid in an individual’s ability to develop resilience. Dr. DeBoer will explain how mental health professionals can assess an individual’s needs based on their situational, environmental, cultural, and historical factors to determine appropriate and effective interventions.
Dr. DeBoer will be sharing specific information to provide optimal treatment interventions during and after a crisis. Attendees will learn new strategies and considerations that encourage healthier emotional and physiological responses while enhancing recovery and cultivating resilience in the individuals who need their help, both during and after the experience of acute distress. She will also review how mental health professionals are responsible for engaging in proactive, self-care behaviors that promote balance, enhance professional competence, and foster resilience in themselves.

Objectives:
Attendees will be able to:

  1. Explain the relationship between crisis-related stress and well-being.
  2. Assess an individual’s needs and determine appropriate interventions during and after crisis.
  3. Describe how thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations affect behaviors during crisis.
  4. Explain the specific components in the process of cultivating resilience.
  5. Formulate treatment plans using strategies and interventions that encourage healthy response, recovery, and resilience in clients.
