ABOUT ABOUT

"How technology shapes brains, relationships, and the sense of self" by Doreen Dodgen-Magee

Description:

Research tells us that American’s spend, on average, 12 hours and 28 minutes a day with screens. This time comes from family talk time, social practice, sleep and physical engagement. As these experiences diminish and engagement with technology increases in private, educational, and professional settings, impacts are being made neurologically, relationally, and intra-personally. While some positive effects are present, many negative effects are also being revealed in the literature (e.g. agitation, boredom intolerance, self centricity and more). Texting, social networking, video game play, porn, and over reliance upon technology will be covered as will the trends and movements of technology in learning and professional settings across the life span. Exposure to up to the day pop culture references and trends will give the participant an ability to discuss the contexts within which their client’s and their client’s communities are residing. Tools will be taught regarding how to assess a client’s engagement with technology and media. An overview of Multiple Intelligences theory will be provided as a tool for helping people find meaningful ways of re-engaging their embodied lives as opposed to their digital ones. Far from being a fear driven covering or an anti technology message, this workshop emphasizes the exploration of techniques for using the art of face to face embodied psychotherapy to create healthy technology use norms and break destructive habits that client’s have developed.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1: List behavioral, neurological, emotional, and practical symptoms of over-use of technology driven entertainment.

Learning Objective 2: Assess impact of current technology use on personal, relational, and neurological domains, isolating areas requiring attention or intervention.

Learning Objective 3: Apply strategic planning skills to help clients develop appropriate technology engagement plans that are based upon healthy and moderate use.
